Take the test your target universities and your visa route both accept, then choose the format that suits you. IELTS is the most widely accepted across destinations, PTE Academic is fully computer-based with fast results, TOEFL is especially common for the United States, and the Duolingo English Test is a shorter, lower-cost online option accepted by many universities for admission but not always for visas.
What Is IELTS?
IELTS Academic tests Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking and is scored in bands from 0 to 9. It can be taken on paper or on computer, and the Speaking test is a conversation with an examiner. It is accepted by universities across the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Europe and the USA.
What Is PTE Academic?
PTE Academic is taken entirely on a computer, including the speaking section, and is scored on a scale of 10 to 90 by automated scoring. Results usually arrive quickly, which helps when a deadline is close. It is widely accepted in Australia, New Zealand, the UK and Canada, and by a growing number of universities elsewhere.
What Is TOEFL?
TOEFL iBT is an internet-based test run by ETS and is the test most associated with applications to the United States, though it is accepted in many other countries too. ETS has been updating the test's format and score scale, so read the current details on the official site before you prepare.
What Is the Duolingo English Test?
An online test you take at home in about an hour, scored from 10 to 160, at a lower fee than the others. Many universities accept it for admission. Its limitation is on the immigration side: some visa routes require a test from an approved list, so confirm with your counsellor before relying on it.
Which Test Is the Easiest?
None is easier in terms of the English level required — universities set equivalent scores across tests. The difference is format. Students who speak more comfortably to a person often prefer IELTS; those who type quickly and like a fully digital test often prefer PTE; and those who want a short test from home choose Duolingo where it is accepted.
How Long Is a Score Valid?
English test scores are generally treated as valid for two years. Time your test so that the score is still valid when you apply for your visa, not only when you apply to the university.
Can I Study Abroad Without Any of These Tests?
Sometimes. Some universities waive the test for students whose previous education was in English. Read our guide to studying abroad without IELTS for where that works and where it does not.
