MBBS Abroad for Indian Students 2026: Eligibility, NEET, Costs & the Route Back to India

Indian students can study MBBS abroad if they have qualified NEET, scored at least 50% in Physics, Chemistry and Biology at 10+2, and join an English-medium program that meets the National Medical Commission's foreign medical graduate rules. Through Versa Global, MBBS in Vietnam starts from ₹31 lakhs for the full 6-year program and MBBS in Georgia typically costs $40,000–50,000 in total. After graduating, you clear the Indian licensing exam and complete an internship in India before you can practise.

Who Is Eligible to Study MBBS Abroad?

The baseline is the same for every destination:

  • A qualifying NEET result
  • 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English
  • At least 50% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry and Biology, relaxed for reserved categories as per NEET norms
  • At least 17 years of age by 31 December of the admission year
  • A valid passport

Notice what is not on the list: a top NEET rank, a donation, or a separate national entrance exam abroad.

Is NEET Compulsory for MBBS Abroad?

Yes. A qualifying NEET result is mandatory for any Indian student who wants to return and practise medicine in India after studying abroad. There is no country that removes this requirement, because it is an Indian rule, not a foreign one. If someone offers you admission "without NEET", understand that the degree would not lead to a licence in India.

What Do NMC's Rules Require From a Foreign Medical Degree?

The National Medical Commission's Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations, 2021 set the conditions a foreign medical education must meet. In plain terms, the course must run for at least 54 months, be followed by a 12-month internship at the same foreign institution, be taught in English, and lead to a qualification that would let you register as a doctor in the country where you studied. The whole program should be completed within ten years of joining. This is why choosing the university matters far more than choosing the country.

How Much Does MBBS Abroad Cost?

Through Versa Global, the two destinations we work with look like this:

  • Vietnam: from ₹31 lakhs for the complete 6-year program, including tuition, hostel and administration fees
  • Georgia: $40,000–50,000 for the complete 6-year program, roughly ₹33–42 lakhs

Compare that with private MBBS seats in India, which routinely cost ₹60 lakhs to over ₹1 crore. Living expenses, flights and visa fees are extra in both countries, and we give you a realistic figure for those during counselling.

What Happens After I Graduate?

You return to India and clear the licensing exam — currently the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE), conducted by NBEMS twice a year. After passing, you complete a 12-month supervised internship in India and then obtain permanent registration. The National Exit Test (NExT) is planned to replace FMGE, so confirm the current position with NMC as you approach graduation.

Which Country Should I Choose?

Vietnam is our lowest-cost option and offers a January intake as well as September. Georgia has a longer history of Indian medical students and a larger alumni network, with intakes in September and February. Costs are close enough that the decision usually comes down to timing, climate and how settled the Indian student community is at your shortlisted university.
