Scholarships for Indian Students to Study Abroad: The Major Awards and How to Win One

Indian students can fund study abroad through government scholarships, university scholarships and Indian trusts. The best-known fully funded awards include Chevening and Commonwealth (UK), DAAD (Germany), Erasmus Mundus (Europe), Fulbright-Nehru (USA), the Global Korea Scholarship and Australia Awards. Most students, though, receive partial university merit scholarships, which are more numerous and easier to win.

Which Scholarships Are Fully Funded?

  • Chevening (UK): the UK government's scholarship for a one-year master's, aimed at future leaders with work experience
  • Commonwealth Scholarships (UK): for master's and PhD study, for candidates from Commonwealth countries
  • DAAD (Germany): scholarships from the German Academic Exchange Service for postgraduate study and research
  • Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters (Europe): master's programs taught across two or more European countries
  • Fulbright-Nehru (USA): fellowships for master's study and research in the United States
  • Global Korea Scholarship (South Korea): the Korean government's award covering tuition, a living allowance, airfare and a language course
  • Australia Awards: the Australian government's scholarships for study in Australia

Each has its own eligibility rules, fields of study and deadlines, usually many months before the course begins.

What Are University Scholarships?

Awards given by the university itself, usually as a reduction in tuition. They are typically based on academic merit, sometimes on the country you apply from, and are often assessed automatically from your application or through a short additional form. Because they are decided early, applying in the first rounds improves your chances.

Are There Indian Scholarships for Study Abroad?

Yes. Indian trusts and foundations — the J.N. Tata Endowment, the Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation and the Narotam Sekhsaria Foundation among them — support Indian students going abroad, through grants or loan scholarships. Central and state government schemes also exist for specific categories of students.

What Makes a Scholarship Application Succeed?

Strong academics are only the start. Selectors look for a clear plan — why this course, why now, and what you will do with it — backed by evidence such as work experience, research, leadership or community involvement. A specific, personal statement beats a generic one every time, and so do recommendation letters from people who actually know your work.

When Should I Apply?

Start a year ahead. Many government scholarships close eight to twelve months before the course starts, and some require you to hold or have applied for a university offer. Missing the deadline is the most common reason good candidates lose out.

What if I Do Not Get a Scholarship?

Most students combine a partial scholarship with family funds and an education loan. Choosing a lower-cost destination — public universities in Germany, or countries such as South Korea — can reduce the amount you need in the first place.
