Study in Japan 2026: MEXT Scholarship, Fees, English Programs & Jobs

Japan offers world-leading engineering and technology education, moderate fees at national universities, a growing number of English-taught programs and the fully funded MEXT scholarship. Students need a Certificate of Eligibility before their student visa, can work up to 28 hours a week with permission, and can stay after graduation to look for work.

How Much Does It Cost to Study in Japan?

National universities charge a standard annual tuition of around ¥535,800 plus a one-time admission fee, which is moderate compared with the UK, USA or Australia. Private universities charge more. Living costs are highest in Tokyo; cities such as Fukuoka, Sendai and Osaka are more affordable.

What Is the MEXT Scholarship?

MEXT is the Japanese government's scholarship for international students. Indian students can apply through the Embassy of Japan in India or through university recommendation. It generally covers tuition, a monthly living allowance and return airfare, and selection includes written tests and interviews.

Can I Study in Japan in English?

Yes. Several leading universities offer English-taught bachelor's and master's programs, particularly in engineering, science and international studies. Graduate research programs often allow you to work in English with your supervisor. Learning Japanese, though, makes part-time work and job hunting far easier, and a JLPT certificate strengthens job applications.

What Is a Certificate of Eligibility?

The Certificate of Eligibility (CoE) is issued by Japanese immigration, usually through your university, before you apply for your student visa at the embassy. It confirms that you meet the requirements for student status.

Can I Work While Studying?

Yes, with permission from immigration to engage in activities outside your student status — up to 28 hours a week during term and more during long vacations.

Can I Work in Japan After Graduating?

Graduates can change to a "Designated Activities" status to continue job hunting, and then to a work visa once hired. Demand for engineers and IT professionals is strong as Japan's workforce ages.

When Are the Intakes?

April is the main intake, with September or October intakes common for English-taught programs. MEXT embassy applications usually open about a year in advance.
