Study in the Netherlands 2026: English-Taught Degrees, Costs & the Orientation Year

The Netherlands has one of the largest selections of English-taught degrees in continental Europe, universities known for research and problem-based teaching, and an orientation year that lets graduates stay to find a job. Non-EU tuition is roughly €8,000–20,000+ a year, and your university applies for your residence permit as your sponsor.

What Is the Difference Between Research Universities and Universities of Applied Sciences?

Research universities such as TU Delft, the University of Amsterdam and Leiden focus on academic and research-oriented degrees. Universities of applied sciences (hogescholen) offer practical, profession-focused programs with internships built in. Bachelor's degrees take three years at research universities and four at universities of applied sciences.

How Much Does It Cost to Study in the Netherlands?

Tuition for non-EU students typically runs from about €8,000 to over €20,000 a year depending on the university and program. Living costs are usually around €1,000–1,500 a month, with Amsterdam and Utrecht at the top end. Student housing is in short supply in the big cities, so arrange accommodation as soon as you accept an offer.

Are There Scholarships for Indian Students?

  • NL Scholarship: a one-off award for non-EEA students at participating Dutch institutions
  • Orange Tulip Scholarship: run through Nuffic Neso India for Indian students at participating institutions
  • University excellence scholarships: offered by many universities for strong applicants

How Do I Apply?

Most applications go through Studielink and the university's own portal. You will typically need your transcripts, an English test score, a motivation letter, a CV and references. Some programs have limited places and early deadlines, so apply between October and January for a September start.

Can I Work While Studying?

Yes, with a work permit (TWV) arranged by your employer. Students can work up to 16 hours a week during the academic year, or full-time in June, July and August.

What Is the Orientation Year?

The orientation year (zoekjaar hoogopgeleiden) is a one-year residence permit for recent graduates of Dutch universities — and of top-ranked foreign universities — to look for work or start a business in the Netherlands. It also makes it easier to qualify for the highly skilled migrant route afterwards.

Is the Netherlands Reducing English-Taught Programs?

The Dutch government has been encouraging universities to limit the number of English-taught bachelor's programs and international intake. Master's programs remain widely available in English, but check that your chosen program is still offered in English for your intake year.
